According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/research-and-surveys\/Documents\/2018%20Employee%20Benefits%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2018 Annual Benefits Report<\/a><\/u>, 40% of the employers surveyed now offer a CDHP to their employees. SHRM defines a CDHP as a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) or a Health Savings<br \/>\nAccount (HSA) paired with any underlying medical plan. In addition, 29% of employers surveyed offer a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) that is not linked to an HSA or HRA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The central tenet of Consumer-Driven Healthcare (CDH) is that when employees have greater involvement in their healthcare finances, they will make better decisions. But is that actually the case? Are employees really ready to step up and take more responsibility for their healthcare? Do they have the foundation of financial knowledge and habits necessary to make CDH work for them?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Alegeus, a market leader in consumer-directed healthcare solutions, recently<br \/>\ncommissioned an independent survey of more than 1,400 U.S. healthcare consumers to try and answer that very question. They didn\u2019t just want to know if consumers understood basic <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> terminology\u2014they wanted a complete picture of their starting points, behaviors, and fluency in healthcare and finance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Here is what they learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Consumers lack basic financial skills<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Alegeus believes that in order to stay on top of their healthcare finances, it\u2019s<br \/>\nessential that consumers develop basic financial habits. Their survey found many consumers don\u2019t have a strong handle on their finances and they aren\u2019t confident in their ability to save for healthcare costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Of the respondents to their survey:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 950px; height: 150px;\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/Healthcare%20Consumerism%20-%20Graphic%201.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">These results are problematic for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> consumerism, which<br \/>\nrequires consumers to be disciplined about their savings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Unfortunately, the survey found that a high proportion of consumers are<br \/>\nundisciplined about savings in general. Of the respondents to the survey, 50% said they were not disciplined about saving for retirement and 51% reported they have no emergency savings at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">It&#8217;s fair to say that if consumers aren\u2019t saving in other important areas of their<br \/>\nlives, then they\u2019re unlikely to save for their healthcare needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Healthcare fluency is still low<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The survey results also highlighted a definite lack of understanding of basic<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> concepts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For example, of the respondents:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Even when consumers <em>believe<\/em> they understand healthcare, the reality is<br \/>\noften quite different. Alegeus found that, while 66% of respondents felt confident in their understanding of basic insurance terminology, only 50% correctly answered a simple true\/false test about premiums and<br \/>\ndeductibles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What\u2019s more, Alegeus has found that this lack of understanding to be magnified when it comes to health benefit accounts, such as Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Of the general population, Alegeus reports that only 19% of people can pass a basic ten-question proficiency test on HSAs, compared to<br \/>\n29% for Flexible Spending Accounts (<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">FSAs<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">). Those numbers do go up amongst individuals currently enrolled in those accounts\u2026but only to 35% and 37%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That\u2019s right. <strong>Around <\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">two-thirds<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong> of people<br \/>\ncurrently enrolled in an HSA or FSA simply do not understand their account.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">According to Alegeus, it\u2019s not just lack of understanding that\u2019s getting consumers into trouble. Many people still struggle to predict how much they will need to spend out-of-pocket on their healthcare expenses:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">55% can\u2019t predict the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">amount<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> services they\u2019ll consume this year<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">51% can\u2019t forecast likely out-of-pocket costs for this plan year<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">58% don\u2019t know or understand how much <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> will cost in retirement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>There is hope for the future<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This is not to say that healthcare consumerism is doomed. The survey did highlight a few positive behaviors that can be built upon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">First of all, 82% of respondents were able to track their spending, with 75%<br \/>\nreporting that they are able to curb impulse spending when necessary. More than half had established clear financial goals. While these may seem like fairly basic financial behaviors, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">they<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> do demonstrate an understanding that<br \/>\nfinancial planning is an essential part of modern life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">40% of respondents indicated that they want to take a more active role in their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> and highlighted key areas in which they would need support:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 600px; height: 334px;\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/Healthcare%20Consumerism%20-%20Graphic%203.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Unsurprisingly, knowledge was highlighted as the single greatest barrier for<br \/>\nconsumers who want to take a more active role in their healthcare finances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Finally, Alegeus saw real cause for optimism in responses from consumers who have already joined the CDH movement. Respondents enrolled in HSAs displayed much higher than average levels of understanding and behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Where do we go from here?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">As CDHPs continue to grow, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Alegeus\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> research results clearly demonstrate<br \/>\nthat consumers feel the impact of their increased responsibility, and they struggle to manage it. Although consumers do have some basic financial systems and knowledge in place, many are not currently in a strong position to manage their healthcare finances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Despite this, many consumers really do want to play a more central role in their<br \/>\nhealthcare journey. When you take into consideration the recent growth of CDHPs, this suggests that consumers are starting to understand the value of healthcare consumerism but are looking to employers and plan providers for increased support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Your employees are looking for the education, tools,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">and<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> support they need to make informed decisions about their health, wellness, and finances.
